A Charge in the Air

Summary: There’s an undeniable charge between Hana and MC (Riley).

Notes: This is a fic for an anonymous prompt request: “First kiss in the rain for Hana x MC” from this list of Kiss Prompts. Thank you for the request!

Riley left the chatter of the ball behind her as she stepped out into the misty evening air. Damn, she thought. The darkness made it hard to see, but she thought she saw movement up ahead in the growing darkness.

“Hana?” Riley called, following the shape in front of her. “Hana?”

The form stopped and turned. “Riley?” Hana asked. “What are you doing out here?”

“I wanted to check on you,” Riley said as she drew closer. “Madeleine was awful. She has no right to talk to you that way.”

Hana sniffled and wiped gingerly at her eyes. “That’s sweet of you to say, but she’s going to be the next queen of Cordonia…she can say whatever she wants.”

“No, she can’t,” Riley said fiercely, startling Hana. “I’m sorry, but she has no right to talk to anyone like that, especially you. You are…” Riley faltered, overcome with too many things she wanted to say, completely floored by the incredible person in front of her. The person she’d been falling for, even if she’d been too scared to admit it. “Smart and beautiful and talented…Hana, you are everything.”

The air between them shifted, charged like an impending lightning storm. The change was almost imperceptible, but when Hana met her gaze, Riley could scarcely breathe. Hana took a a tentative step forward, eyes fixed on Riley’s. Riley braced herself with what little courage she had left to brush her fingers against Hana’s. A thrill that made her knees quiver a little coursed through her when she felt Hana lightly capture her fingertips in her soft hands. Riley barely noticed the slight rumble of thunder in the distance, nearly inaudible over the hammering of her heart. She was terrified to speak, worried that any little thing might break this spell.

“Riley.” Hana’s voice was so quiet that Riley almost wasn’t sure she’d heard it. Riley felt like all the air had evaporated from her lungs as she leaned forward, hoping against hope that this wouldn’t all dissolve into a dream, one that left her squeezing her eyes closed and praying to stay asleep for just a few more minutes.

Hana moved a little closer to her and Riley felt the charge in the air rise higher and higher, nearing its crescendo. Finally, unable to wait any longer, Riley closed the distance between them and lightly pressed her lips to Hana’s. Hana pulled her closer, tightening her fingers around Riley’s.

When the rain began to fall, neither of them noticed.
