“I thought I’d find you out here.”

Natalie opened her eyes and looked over from where she lay on the pool float to see Teppei standing at the apartment building pool’s edge.

“You’re back early,” she said, unable to keep the smile from spreading across her lips.

“Finished early at the shop so I thought I’d come by,” Teppei said as he crouched down. “Are you wearing sunscreen? I don’t want you to burn.”

“Of course,” Natalie said as she slid into the water and swam over to him. “You worried about me?”

“I’m always worried about you.”

“I’m a big girl, Teppei.”

“No one said you weren’t.”

Natalie studied him for a moment, meeting his dark, steady, unreadable gaze. Then, without warning, she grabbed his arms and kicked off the side of the pool with her feet, tugging him into the water. Teppei landed with a splash beside her, pushing the hair out of his face as she resurfaced.

“You’re trouble, you know that?” Teppei said, a hint of a smile playing at the corner of his serious lips as he wrapped his arms around her and pushed her against the side of the pool.

“Excuse me, Mr. Kaneko, I believe that between the two of us, you’re a much bigger troublemaker,” Natalie said, sliding her arms around his neck. “Do you have any other appointments today?”

“No,” Teppei said, pressing her to him. “I’m all yours.”

“Are you now?” she asked.

“Do you need me to show you?” he murmured as he trailed his lips over her brow, sliding one hand down to pull her leg up around his waist.

“I always need you,” she whispered, wrapping her arms more tightly around him. Despite how long they’d been together, every moment with him still felt so unbelievable, like he might disappear at any moment and leave her alone, holding only a memory. She closed her eyes as Teppei rocked his hips against hers. He captured her lips in a searing kiss, warming her in a way that had nothing to do with the sun. As she deepened the kiss, she couldn’t ignore the thought that even the pool couldn’t dampen the dragon’s fire that coursed through him, seeping into her with each touch, each kiss, each caress. “Teppei…”

“Let’s go inside,” he said, lips ghosting over her ear. “This is a public pool–I can’t love you the way I want to out here.”

Natalie pulled back, cupping his face in her hands as she stared into his eyes. “What?” He said nothing, watching her carefully. She was afraid to speak, afraid to shatter the spell of the moment, she did the only thing she could–she kissed him, pouring the love she had for him into that kiss, terrified that if she stopped, he’d vanish.

Eventually, they got out of the pool and went inside, waterlogged and in love.
